That is a printing flaw, happens quite a lot on stamps printed by this process. The flaw does not repeat from one sheet to the next so it is not a constant variety and does not usually have any additional value.

Peter, it can repeat as my (Canada) scott 657 does...I have a single and an upper right plate block with both exact same donut on them..so it can happen.

And I was hoping it was a constant.

Well, almost anything is possible. But usually it does not, at least not in exactly the same spot in my opinion! I have been trying to find the earlier post about this phenomenon, but so far no luck!

Here's a repeating donut created by a loose piece of paper from the top souvenir sheet in the group of 8. The paper piece came from the bottom left stamp (just at C of Canada), creating donuts on its' own sheet plus the following 7 sheets. They are outlined in yellow just right of the UPC codes and above the traffic lights.

As these are the only reported souvenir sheets with this donut, it is not a "constant" variety. Luckily for me, these are Canada Post's first withdrawn stamp issue

ty for the replies. im a little puzzled though as to the constant variety. if there is a flaw on a stamp and it shows up in the top coner for example and its on every sheet that I take it is a constant variety and is/can be of value. why is it that if there is a flaw on a stamp from the printing proess and it does not repeat on every sheet or maybe not repeat at all wht would there be no value in that because there would be so few of them.

Engraved plate flaw varieties occur over many, many impressions (thousands). The flaw is in the steel. The printing flaws above may occur over a few sheets but would never occur over thousands of impressions. The flyspeccers may be better able to define this difference. Zooming in at high digital levels is driving us to revisit the definitions of many of the legacy nomenclature.

I will try to answer. Above, BlackJag showed 8 sheets with a repeating flaw. This flaw was caused by a loose piece of paper and eventually fell away. In this case there was nothing wrong with the plate, and I would call this an oddity. In my collection of coil stamps I have several strips that show a hair (?) that got stuck on the press for a limited time. That too is an oddity - no damage to the plate.
A plate crack on the other hand is something gone awry with the plate. In the best of worlds this should have been caught by an inspector but it got out. Depending on how many got out, or how attractive the crack is to collectors
is the price of the stamp. But any way you look at it, it is a constant plate variety (CPV) because it happens on all the press runs.
A flaw like the one on the Canada sheet above may or may not be of interest to specialist collectors and if there is any value it usually very little.

Seriously, a guy like me who try to collect the best specimens within my budget have a real hard time to understand why peoples collect printers mistakes.

Did actually peoples pay extra for those thing that good quality control should have trash or it's just an imaginary thing that make them believe they found a rarity ?

For my guy, you are collecting printer trash..... but I'm 110% ok with it, that leave less peoples to buy the perfect stamps and the price stay lower.

It is good to know that I am not the only one who feels this way.
