Hi Guys...Hope this is not a stupid question...This is an army cover sent to some one in Washington State...NO stamp, and says "free".

My question is it was mailed My 11th - 1946...After the war ended..Did this continue..??..And for how long after...??

Robert

December 31, 1947 according to p163 of Lawrence Sherman's "The United States Post Office in World War II". Of course by then the military had been much reduced in size, so finding 1947 use is even more challenging.

Here is a last day of the free frank.

Robert, to further your education............... We have a Washington State here, which is way out west, sort of below Vancouver BC. The beautiful cover you showed was sent to someone in Washington DC, which is almost on the east coast. It is also the capital of the United States.

Here's the legislation:

SEC. 10. Any first-class letter mail matter admissible to the mails
as ordinary mail matter which is sent by a member of the military
or naval forces of the United States (including the United States
Coast Guard), while on active duty or in the active military or naval
service of the United States, to any person in the United States,
including the Territories and possessions thereof, shall be transmitted
in the mails free of postage, subject to such rules and regulations
as the Postmaster General shall prescribe. This section shall
cease to be in effect after December 31, 1947.

(This was an extension of free franking that was approved during the war.)

Robert, the United States World Ward II free franking privilege extended to the United States military became effective on 1 April 1942 and ended on 31 December 1947. Note that the free franking applied only to first class mail. Air Mail and special services required payment in stamps.
