Hi everyone, I collect at the moment WW1 postcards but would like to start collecting stamps from that period as well. I haven't collected stamps since I was a boy so any advice on how to go about it or what stamps to get would be appreciated. Actualy just been looking at stamp and coin mart website and I notice that the august 2014 issue was a ww1 special so if anyone knows where I might be able to get a back issue then that would be great, I know I can order the digital edition from the site but I prefer the paper mag if possible. Thanks.

Frogy, welcome to the website. We are a very helpful bunch here, but we do not read tealeaves! Please give us the name of the paper / magazine that you are trying to find.

When you say WW1, do you mean soldier's mail, or unit pictures, or battlefields, or patriotic messaging, or notes from home, or ... I have an irrational attraction to BDA (Bomb Damage Assessment) postcards, myself. Go figure. Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

frogy, I'm not sure where to start with your request; there are so many directions one might take!
The stamps that stand out as being from the WWI-era are those marked with "war tax" (from Great Britain and the Commonwealth) and stamps overprinted because a country or area was occupied. There are stamps overprinted marking them as for military use, also, and there are many, many interesting stamps issued as a result of the close of the war.
I'll try to link some good selections later in the day. (Or I'll place some images here as examples.) |

If you're interested in collecting stamps from the immediate aftermath of WWI, there are numerous other possibilities. There are a lot of issues from short-lived "countries" that only existed for a couple of years in the immediate aftermath of the war. There are 6 from the German sphere - Allenstein, Marienwerder, Schleswig, Upper Sillesia, Danzig and Saar. Danzig and Saar were around for a lot longer than the others (up to 20 years in the case of Danzig), but none of them would have existed at all but for WWI. There were several others in Europe as well - Eastern Silesia, the nations in the Caucuses, Siberia and other Russian territories that briefly issued stamps, etc. If you also include the Middle East and Asia, there well over two dozen "dead countries" that only existed because of WWI and its effects. It's a fascinating era of history and philately. And most of the stamps are affordable and not too hard to find. |

History is something I've long been passionate about (I have a B.A. in it), but the history of Europe from 1914 to about 1950 or so has always held a special fascination for me. I've been meaning to start a specialized collection centered around that era someday. I have most of the stamps from the German sphere as part of my German-area collection, but so far I haven't gotten much farther than printing some pages and buying a handful of stamps from the other areas. |
