A member of a paper money forum pointed out a detail on a bank check I had posted there and totally overlooked. This check was issued July 2, 1898 and sports a 2-cent battleship revenue. The tax on checks was only re-introduced the previous day and only the larger banks had the battleships in stock at the time. I'd be interested in learning the relative scarcity and value of this early issuance.

What value it has is mostly due to the illustrated nature of the check. First day checks with the 2 cent battleship are not all that scarce, and are realistically $35-$50 items most of the time, although some dealers do try to get more. Because this check is an ABNCO product, it might be worth somewhat more to some collectors than it would otherwise.
