Hi. I would appreciate some help in understanding these covers. The first has writing on it in pencil that reads 'Type 1 scarce', but as far as I can tell the stamp is a rotary perf. 10 Scott 583 and not so scarce at all. So maybe he/she was referring to the 3 line U.S. Pittsburgh cancel? On the reverse also written in pencil is the word 'Pittsburgh 111a' which through a little bit of internet research may be the type of cancel.. type 3a? The only reference I could find was an old one sold on ebay as 'scarce'. Just how scarce I have no idea, as the auction is over and I have no idea if it sold and what for. so all info. is welcome. Pictures number 1 and 5 go together.

For the second cover I have it down as a possible 178 and U163 or U168? Interesting is the large chip missing from his nose maybe? Any help out there with this?

decrynne, I`m afraid I can`t help all that much except to say that the Pittsburgh was the ship that landed Marines in China earlier this year. It does read 1927, doesn`t it? It's an interesting cover.

P.S. The Pittsburgh may have been the flagship for the Asiatic Fleet at this time.

The top cover is likely to be more valuable, Persia is an unusual destination for the time.
