I've come across a mysterious Bahamas dark brown and black 5 pence with watermark crown CC pictured in the middle. Scott has a listing for an orange and black 5 pence (number 34), shown to the left in the picture. For comparison, there's a brown and black 3 pence (number 59) shown to the right in the picture. Any ideas on what this mystery stamp is?

The middle stamp is the same as the one on the left. The orange has oxidized into the brown color. I wouldn't recommend it since it's a mint stamp, but a hydrogen peroxide solution will revert the stamp to it's original color. Many orange colored stamps of this period are color changelings.

Would the hydro peroxide cause any problems to gum?

Hydrogen peroxide is sold as a solution in water usually very diluted so the gum will was off at worst and be damaged at best.

You only need outgassing for it to work and change color back. In other words, used a small covered bowl. Place the stamp above the fluid on some kind of platform, cover bowl and let the fumes change the stamp color.

As far as I know "out gassing" peroxide would only generate oxygen. While not doubting what you say I would have thought that for gaseous oxidation to work you would need ozone. Not that I have ever tried this myself so I am propbably talking rubbish.

I did have a quick look on the web but gave up when I found this
THE USE OF A WARM WATER ENEMA BEFORE RECTAL OZONE INSUFFLATION

I really do not need to know more

Thank you all for the responses. I had suspected it might be something like oxidation or some other chemical change to the color.

Mount,
Bill Weiss wrote a short article on the sulphurization of orange colored stamps. You can read the article on the Stamp Smarter web site http://www.stampsmarter.com/. Go to Features|Weiss Library in menu. The article is the third from the bottom named "How To Remove Oxidation From Stamps".
