Hello friends, I would like to request advice if possible. I'm not expert of german stamps. I have 3 stamps 800 tausend or saufend, I can not understand the difference, and they are all canceled with stamp. On the internet you can find everything, from those who say they are not worth anything to those who say they are worth 700 Euros, as the philatelic website German http://philadb.com/?site=list&catid...d=484&id=676Please can you tell me if my stamps are those from 700 euro or a few cents? Attached I place related photos. Thank you all for the help.

Welcome!
Most of these stamps from the pre-war inflationary period are worth just pennies. Your third stamp, however, may be worth about forty dollars if proven genuine. Apparently this stamp is desirable with a black surcharge. |

The surcharges all look green to me on my computer.
Each is priced at around 6 pounds in my 2011 SG catalogue. |

Hello KGB, thanks so much for your answer and info :-) Can I profit of your knowledge asking you the following questions please ? - my stamps are tausend or saufend ? - which is the difference with that €700 canceled stamp that I can see next Phils db website ? - does it exist a online catalog related ? I have found "stamp world" website but it seems unreal, they start to show german stamps by 1949 up lol ..... Gianluca |

Hi Gianluca,
These inflation surcharges say "Tausend" meaning Thousand Marks.
I'm not aware of a black surcharge on this stamp but in any case this one looks definitely green to me - compare the colour of the "800" to the black cancellation. |

Gianluca, the German is `tausend` for thousand. The Gothic type is awful to read for the inexperienced. (I have a lot of trouble with it!)
nigel may very well be right about the color of the surcharge. (I`m awful with colors.)
I`ll see if I can find a site for you to read about this inflationary stamps. |

As for the stamp to which you linked, this is a rare variety in cancelled form. The 800 surcharge was not meant to be placed on the 500 mark stamp and some of these stamps entered into the marketplace before the mistake was discovered. |

Nigelc, mmmm, yes, I think you are right, there is a difference of tonality between the "800" and the black cancellation . Thanks for your help.
KGB thanks again for everything, so for what I understand, these rare stamps are the 800 surcharge over 500 marks only ? Ok for your research about online related catalog, you're really gentle.

Yes, the 800 surcharge on the 500 mark stamp is the rarity, though there are other varieties of these stamps that are somewhat valuable. |

I am not that knowledgeable about this issue, in particular. However, when the value of any stamp is in an overprint/surcharge and/or the cancellation, one needs to be extremely wary of forgeries. This is particularly true with German stamps. I can't comment as to whether the overprints or cancellations are genuine in this case, but you'd want to get an expert opinion on anything particularly valuable. |

Hello eggiacalus
Just a side remark from Germany: Saufend would translate as swigging or swilling. enjoy your stamps without too much booze! Heinrich |

Eggiacalus, I saw on one of your earlier posts that you think Stampworld starts Germany in 1949. You are not reading the country listing correctly. What you clicked on was the German Federal Republic, and it did indeed start in 1949. If you had gone to the German Empire for instance, or to some of the German states you would have found the true beginning of German stamps!
