From a Linn's news report, not an ebay listing:

Quote:
... It was a prime example of the kind of unique item that gives a collection added dimension and elevates philately beyond the mere filling of album spaces and into the realm of history and human interest ...

I know that we all know how to google a quote but, before you do, please give a moment's thought as to what might have earned this level of praise.

No, not the $33,600 invert ... further down.

Cheers,

I'll take a stab and say it was a cover with a fairly common stamp but with some fascinating historical tie from either the sender, receiver or both.

Postal history is where you can recover the most "human interest" in the usage of a stamp or piece of government-issued postal stationary.

It's serious overhype, but to be fair, that condition is legitimately extremely rare for that item. After writing this I realized they were not talking about the invert. Which makes it Even more serious overhype about a pretty but hardly likely to be unique item.

I think I remember reading this. It was a stamp with a Montana territorial cancel, was it not?

My letter to Santa Claus, posted in 1965, which has finally made it to the big auction houses as a cultural artefact?

I always wondered why I never got a reply though. My parents said he was just too busy.
