Is This A Form Of Cancellation?

I've come across a few of these tonight, and would like to know if the grid is a form of cancellation for revenues? It completely penetrates the stamp (so that you can see light through it)

Would love to hear the experts opinions! I'd be interested to know also if a ref in this condition (on piece) would be worth more or less than a ref not cancelled this way?

On a separate note, RevCollector, I am loving your website. It's helping me immensely.

It's a roller cancel, usually used on the signatures of checks and other securities, but often used on stamps as well. Usually when they were placed near the signature, but not always.
