Ding Darling would be having a bird!

One of our favorite places to visit is the Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve on Sanibel Island.

As a duck stamp collector, I now donate (I do not hunt) $60.50 a year for cost of a Federal Duck stamp, a Federal self-adhesive, a Federal Jr and a Louisiana Duck stamp. Adding another bird in the back ground would not stop me from continuing to purchase them, but I too do not believe that many people will purchase a duck stamp just to have a small image of another bird on the stamp- especially an American Bald Eagle and other such birds on a stamp promoting hunting along with conservation. The Labrador retrievers are nice touch though. Good links ikeyPikey!

I was lecturing a child on the importance of continuing self-education, and she exclaimed:

"Please! I see my grandmother reading the New York Times every day, and she knows something about everything."

Thx, A.

I can see how, after 80+ years, one could run out of ducks to put on duck stamps. Including raptors that hunt ducks might well add new life to the program. Just picture it ... a bald eagle or a peregrine falcon taking down a blue-winged teal in flight! The combinations of different birds of prey & waterfowl would add dozens of new scenarios to those dull old duck stamps, rendering the need to periodically repeat the same species irrelevant.
A truly bird-brained idea.
If someone wants to sell stamps to bird watchers, let them do so without impinging on an already lengthy & successful program and potentially damaging it. And I say that as a confirmed bird watcher!

My wife and I are bird watchers, too. One of the best deals going is the "USFW Senior Pass". For $10-, you gain access to every park/refuge in the country - FOR LIFE! Compare that to a $25- duck stamp good for one year.

Of course, as a stamp collector, I still buy both stamps each year.

Bald eagles eat mostly fish, although they will rarely eat a duck if available. They are generally considered more of a scavenger than a hunter, this is due to the large percentage of dead fish carrion that makes up their diet.

Most people are aware of Ben Franklin's opinion on the eagle…

Quote:
"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him…"

Perhaps they should just go back to the beginning and put Archaeopteryx on one. THAT would be a best seller.

Just think, she'd know more about everything if she read something else every day! I stopped reading it 40 years ago, and know a lot more now that I did then. Coincidence? Not entirely. The NYT has a very narrow worldview, not so different than other denizens of Manhattan:
