I've seen various 20th century parcel tags with revenues affixed paying parcel tax, and wanted to add an example to my collection, but never got around to picking one up.

I saw this one and just had to have it. Likely not the most important usage philatelically, but It's got great visual aesthetics and a very eclectic mix of stamps and other attributes:

1. Scott C1 and C3 airmails.

2. A block of four of Scott 531, one-cent imperf.

3. Split precancel on Scott R229.

4. The tag is for 25 pounds of stamp mission mixture... definitely related to the hobby!

The breakdown of the stamps' payment is indicated on the address side of the tag:

29 cents postage
5 cents insurance
2 cents tax

Wow, a really nice combination of stamps on that label.
And look! The 6¢ Jenny is inverted!

(somebody was going to say it. might as well have been me.)

Love to have 25 pounds of "common" US stamps from this time period, no one knew much about W/F types yet. Aside from the mint bluish papers and a couple of the perf 12 flat plate coils (which only had mint prices) none of them catalogued much. There might have been anything in it.

Was the tax on the insurance?

The tax was on the total postage, one cent per 25 cents or fraction for all packages with postage above 25 cents.
So postage up to 25 cents paid no tax, but that first 25 cents was counted once it went above that.

Because of the nature of parcel post being mostly larger packages in wrappers rather then covers and tags these usages are not so common.

I wonder what it would sell for if still attached to an original unopened box

It might not have been a box, but a burlap sack.
