How Do You Tell Watermark When Stamp Is On A Cover

I have an cover from India, the postmark look like Dec 8, 1870

the stamp is (Scott) number 11 (unwmk) or 20 (wmk 38 - Elephants Head)

Leejb1...A stamp expert here in Canada told me that with a little trial and error and a strong light and holding the cover at about a 45 degree angle, it is possible.

I've been able to do it using this technique, but you have to have the right scanner, and it doesn't work with some watermarks.
