Arfkin in his seminal book on dues noted there were no known plate varieties except scratches and a gouge.

Here are a couple of examples of what I believe are double transfers. This is a request for comment as I have more.

Would the first be a misplaced transfer?

Rporter314, and a very welcome to this forum. I am not very familiar with the postage dues, but it looks much like poor plate wiping.

I agree. Doesn't look like DTs to me at first glance.

ok maybe these are more interesting

The Arfkin pics are shown in his book

A dent or something else?

The plate flaw is confirmed with a second example.

Line through is confirmed with several examples including a proof.

I still have other examples of similar to the first post.

Remember those same plates where used to print J1 - J28 from 1879 - 1894. I suspect that they would scratches, dents, and whatever.

A year old thread but, Any chance that rporter314 is still around? Hasn't posted since last May, have some questions on cancels used on Dues.
Just picked up this pair for the cancel, a faint purple Short Pai(d)?
Hasn't arrived yet but the seller's scan isn't too bad. I tried retroReveal, and can see two more lines of Date and ??. I'll re submit with a higher resolution scan when they get here. I hope that the scan is reprehensive of the color.

Here is an up-dated scan of the pair and a link to the retroRevel upload. Can anyone read the date and the city? Thank you for any help.

It is a short paid cancel. There is at least two cities which are known to have used the cancel, St Louis, which is most common and Pittsburgh, far less common. I am looking for other cities which used the cancel as I have several varieties which have not been associated with any particular city.

Thank you, glad you're still around. Not many folks post about the early bank note dues.
Glad to know that there are some varieties, though some of those you show seem to be inking artifacts, like a fiber on the plate.

The pair I posted was canceled in Pittsburg, PA Jul 24 1885, (crossbar of 2nd 8 is missing). A brown red.
