Well, that maybe because it is German, not Dutch! And it is a bit confusing, because the Cinderelas that you show commemorate 300 years of something that happened in the city of Groningen, which is in the Netherlands. Loosely translated: "Commemorative stamps. 300 years of relief in Groningen 1672-1972. Official memorial day August 27". Something is written in Dutch on the Cinderelas and if you can post a close up of one of them maybe it will clear up things.

OK, more info. On August 27, 1672 the bishop of Muenster, Germany tried to capture the city of Groningen in the northern part of the Netherlands. The bishop, Bernhard von Galen (1606-1678) was beaten and set back to his see. In the city of Groningen this feat is commemorated each year, and 1972 was a special one. The day the battle started was August 27, the day of the decisive battle was the next day, August the 28th. Hope all this helps - it certainly taught me some history of my fatherland that I never knew! By the way, I called this a Cinderela, because it reads on the sheetlet ( in German ) that the "stamps" are not good for mailing!

I tried Google to translate in both Dutch and German with no results. I wonder relief of what?
The stamps read: Herdenkingszegel Groningen 300 jaar outset 1672-1972
Groningen met bodemschatten een der nijkste gebieden van Europa

I think I figured it out with the help of Wikipedia. "The Siege of Groningen was a battle that took place in 1672 during the Franco-Dutch war. It was a Dutch victory that ended all hope of the Bishop of Münster to push deeper into the Netherlands. The Münster army was so weakened by the defeat that the Dutch army successfully reconquered much of the land that Münster had conquered just weeks earlier. Every year, the city of Groningen celebrates its victory as a local holiday on August 28." |

The text on the stamps would probably be: Herdenkingszegel Groningen 300 jaar ontzet 1672-1972
This translates to: Commemorative stamp 300 year relief 1672-1972
The word 'ontzet' is in Dutch used for the relief of a siege during war.
The next text is probably: Groningen met bodemschatten een der rijkste gebieden van Europa
Which translates to: Groningen with its natural resources one of the richest parts in Europe
Groningen is rich in natural gas. Actually the term 'the Dutch disease'used in economics, is related to the fact that the Dutch economy depends too much on the revenues of this natural gas. |

Thank you all for the response. I find the online translation websites such as Babylon, Google and others have great difficulties with Dutch, German, Danish and Polish translations to English; especially with philatelic words. Many online translations make little sense in English or are hard to understand.
