Would anyone know what kind of cancel appears on this partial cover with a New Haven CT postmark? Thanks.

Hard to tell since it is incomplete and poorly struck. It might be one of these geometric cancels. Some people classify them as fancy cancels but I hesitate to do so since they are not like the famous ones that portray animals and people and the like.

This is listed in Skinner/Eno as GE-M1. Although a weak strike, it is virtually complete, and the New Haven CDS is very nice. It is, however, overpriced in my opinion; "reduced" as it is - a $10 item at best.

With apologies to Kimo - this IS a fancy cancellation. Bullseyes, ellipses and grids are certainly worth placement in a 19th century cancellation collection but those are workhorse cancels, used virtually everywhere from 1st to 6th class Post Offices - not truly fancy. Think of them as the spray-ons or wavy bars of their day.

Geometrics are hand-made, often unique to a single PO and so definitely fancy.

Thank you both for the information and insight. I thought that the price was a bit much for only half a cover, but I was still intrigued by the cancel and was curious what it was all about.

Hi Kurt. No worries - I know that many people consider these to be fancy cancels and the reasons why which you have done a good job explaining, and this is why is why I worded my comment the way I did. I was simply stating my personal opinion of how I see them as they are more mechanical in the way they were made as opposed the freehand artistic carvings of the ones of animals and people and other objects.
