Anybody used Philotax catalogues for Germany in either printed or on-line forms? It seems that recent editions supposed to have many varieties and also links to Michel numbers. Online access is 99 euro per year. I cannot find any samples - like one page of actual document, just to see how it is structured and what information is included.

Just went to the web site and I don't speak German. I was wondering is there an English version of this or the Michel Catalog. I have the Scott's ecatalog but want something a bit more specialized. |

If you're looking for something more specialized than Scott, don't bother with SG. They're both poor in their coverage of Germany.
What period of Germany are you interested in? |

All but mostly for the early ones. Say per 1950ish and per 1960 for Berlin and DDR. |

Unfortunately Philotax is not responding to my questions. I used couple of different e-mail addresses, but everything is simply ignored. I wish I can get advise from somebody who had a chance to look at Philotax catalogue. For example - do they show images of varieties and flaws or just descriptions (like Michel for most of them)? |

OK - I did not get any feedback from Philotax in advance, but still took a risk and purchased DVD "Briefmarken-Katalog Alliierte Besetzung" (1945-1949). DVD arrived promptly (in about 10 days after I placed online order). Next step was very complicated - installation took couple of days with multiple customer service requests (however, on this stage I always got prompt responses). I had to clean-up Windows Registry and do other tricks before installation was complete. When software was installed, then next step was Registering particular catalogue on my computer (the same software package could serve many different Philotax catalogues and each one should be properly registered). Overall it took 4 days to install and register everything. Now my first observations: Catalogue coverage is very similar to Michel specialized. Each stamp (and varieties) assigned Philotax number and Michel number as alternative, like: Nummer / Referenz Nummer GA030-2 / 945aa The most important difference is that Philotax shows images for most of varieties and even many Plate Flaws. That was primary reason for my purchase - I wanted pictures instead of written descriptions (specifically for Plate flaws, because Michel only shows some of them). So far I like what I see - images helped me to find many Plate Flaws in my collection and even sort out some color differences. In addition to simple Catalogue functionality, Philotax software allows you to manage Stamp Inventory (it allows to create multiple virtual "Albums" and maintain them as inventory of actual stamps). Also software allows create and print Album pages in different formats that supposed to accommodate stamps from your "virtual" Album perfectly. However, I did not try any of those advanced functions yet: Software is in German and there is no any English manuals (except small FAQ list). I may try to deal with "Albums" later.

I just Googled it - there are many Philex catalogues available, including Germany, but it seems they are only sold as printed books. Printed book in German is not working for me, because of translation issue. On computer I can easily translate everything by selecting text and pasting it into Google for instant automatic translation.
