Are All Mis Perfs, Really Mis Perfs..?

Hi guys...Been thinking about the terminology we as stamps collectors have taken as the standard for years...

Everyone and I mean everyone calls the picture below a mis perf.



Here is my take on mis perfs..Ya maybe the majority of perfs off center can be called mis perfs, but in some cases a mis perf is NOT a mis perf...

Take a look at the pane of stamps below, and imagine if it was run through the perforation machine upside down...Look at the pane, the salvedge top and bottom is different, and if it is fed into the perf machine it would look and be called a mis perf...can we think of another name to call this phenomenon..?

I don't think I grasp the need for a distinction. If pressed, I suppose one could call the proposition a misfed perforation.

(But aren't they all misfed perforations?)

Some are more misfed than others.

I think anything other than the intended perforations is a misperf. The biggest difference being the degree of mis-perforation. And isn't that easier to discuss by showing a picture of the stamp(s) and giving a verbal description than trying to come up with a dozen or two dozen new terms.....which would be as subjective as the original term.

Was wondering if a guy could prove that a sheet went through the printer's perforation machine backwards, that it now becomes, lets say a "Reverse perf"..??...Just for argument sake.

You could do that. But since mis-perf has been a term forever wouldn't it be easier to add the reverse part afterwards?

I guess you could call this a folded corner but mis-perf and a picture is as effective.

Such a pane would originally be perforated as a sheet of 200 stamps which was broken down into four panes of 50 stamps. The pane shown is Upper Left (UL) while others would be Upper Right (UR), Lower Right (LR) and Lower Left (LL). When a sheet is placed into the perforator, if the stamp subjects are not aligned properly with the perforating wheels, then the perforations will perforate out of alignment (that is the sheet being fed out of alignment) since the wheels are preset usually at equal distances from each other to account for the size of the stamp design in between.

I believe the proper term nowadays is "Mz Perfs" ;)
