I have a 1930 Syrian stamp with the overprint LATTAQUIE. I believe this is Syria's major port but I'm not sure what this overprint would signify. Thanks for any help. Jim

Latakia formed part of France's division of its mandated territories in Greater Syria after WWI. At that point it was known as the State of the Alaouites (Alawis). In May 1930, it became a republic, and, in September 1930, took the name of Latakia. Latakia was merged into Syria in 1936 and its stamps were withdrawn in 1937. All of its stamps were overprinted Syrian issues.
