Here are three more values from Berlin's "Berlin Buildings" series of 1949. These three stamps depict an identical image of the Town Hall in Schoeneberg. From Wikipedia, "Rathaus Schoeneberg is the city hall for the borough of Tempelhof-Schoeneberg in Berlin. The sandstone building was constructed between 1911 and 1914... In 1950 the Freedom Bell, a gift from the United States, was installed in the rebuilt tower...After the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the steps of the Rathaus Schoeneberg were the location where U.S. President John F. Kennedy spoke on 26 June 1963, proclaiming "Ich bin ein Berliner." |

This 5 gulden stamp (Mi #210) of Danzig is one of a set of five "Landscape" stamps from 1924 and was issued on November 28 of that year. It depicts St. Mary's Church which dates from the fourteenth century. From Wikipedia, "With its volume between 185,000 and 190,000 cubic meters, it is currently one of the two or three largest brick churches in the world...Between 1536 and 1572 St. Mary's Church was used for Roman Catholic and Lutheran services simultaneously. From the 16th century until 1945, when Danzig became Polish Gdansk, it was the second largest Lutheran church in the world." Circa 1900 pic shows a view of the church very much like the one on the stamp. |

And, here is the 10 gulden stamp (Mi #211) from Danzig's 1924 "Landscape" set. It was also issued on November 28. The stamp depicts Long Market and the main city hall. From Wikipedia, "Gdansk Main Town Hall is one of the finest examples of the Gothic-Renaissance historic buildings in the city...The oldest fragments of the town hall come from 1327 to 1336 - the building was then much smaller in size...The building is the second highest building in the main city after St. Mary's Church...Heavily damaged in WW2, with the loss of the top of the tower, it was carefully repaired and reconstructed, largely complete by 1952." Modern pic shows the street and building as they appear today. |
