First time seeing this type of impression. I thought it was a grille but not leaning that direction now.If you know what this is or what has caused this phenomenon please enlighten me. Thanks!

It's a waffle/roller cancel. Usually has a negative impact on value.

It's a roller cancel of the type usually used to cover signatures and dollar amounts on checks. If the stamp happened to be nearby it got cancelled that way as well, a fairly common occurrence.

Q/ Why is the pattern so irregular?

Was the surface of a waffle/roller cancel periodically refreshed with glued-on grit?

Or, were many of the indentations on the stamp lost when it was soaked & pressed?

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

This stamp has lead a very hard life, and not all rollers are the same. At this point it's impossible to know all that has happened to this particular item.
