I heart my local stamp library in Denver Colorado! Some battleship precancels!

Thought these were cool. Looked kind of like money bags!

Did have a couple odd ones I had a couple questions about.

Why would someone use only a 3 date stamp for the year and pen in the 9 for the date?

I would think this was just a mistake on the hand stamp used since 1808 is obviously way too early.

This is the cancel that had the 3 date cancel with the pen cancel to add for the year?

Edit: found the 1898revenues website which explained this one.

The J. Elwood Lee monogram printed cancels (you call coin bag cancels) were almost certainly prepared at the urging of one of the firm's salesmen (he happened to be a stamp dealer on the side!), Lewis Robie, who marketed these to his stamp customers. The overwhelming majority of these have original gum, a clue that these were not used on the firm's products.

You were right revenuemd. On the monogram ones there was gum on the 1/4 but not on the 5/8. What did you all think of the 1808 mistake from E. W. H. & CO?

Setting up cancelling plates, especially setting up 100 positions is a tedious task. Most of the errors I have seen involve commas and spacing, so this is somewhat unusual. E.W.H. & Co. is not a common cancel, but it is not super rare either. To a specialist, it would be attractive at $10-15. Above that probably I would have to think about it. I will check later against the Chappel-Joyce listing of these and see if they recorded the error.

Chappel-Joyce does not list the 1808 (almost certainly intended to be 1898) variety, but the cancel is recorded on the #8539;¢, ¼¢, #8541;¢, and 2 ½¢ denominations. It would appear that the #8541;¢ denomination was their workhorse. That would have been for a product that retailed at no more than 25¢. The initials stand for E. W. Hoyt & Co. of Lowell, Massachusetts. Their primary products were Hoyt's German Cologne and Rubiform for the Teeth (tooth wash).

Wow!! So much information! Looks like I'll be looking into getting a few more books to research. Maybe someday I can focus on a more specific area of us stamps but for now I'm still collecting about everything I can get my hands on! Need to get back to my stamp library soon and see if I can find some more cool finds.
