P.e.i Stamp...scott 5 Or Scott 5g...?

Hi guys...I am having trouble figuring out if this Prince Edward Island stamp is a Scott 5 or 5G...Perfs for top and bottom is 11.95 and left and right is 11.45.

Any help is appreciated..Thanks.

Robert, what would be the difference between both? Just for the un-initiated amongst us, of which I am one.

Hey wert the thing to look for on the 5g stamp is it's perfed 11 x 11 1/2 or 12. The 11 1/2 by 12 you have is just 5 sorry man.

Actually Robert's stamp is rounded to 12 x 11-1/2 as the horizontal measurements are listed first.

Didn't even notice that one BeeSee. Interesting it's not 5 then and not 5g.

I will check mine when I get home tonight. I have several 5's including a block and some on cover.

Now I am confused..I originally had it identified as a 5i.

Also have a 5 which I thought was a 1.........and G is not present in my 2009 Scott Catalogs but mentioned in my updated 2016 software as Type "QV"(?) white paper 2p 1862 Rose. No description by Scott of the qualities of the type G

5g is not listed, though I think it is in Unitrade which I do not have handy.

Notice at the top the perfs are listed as varying from 11 to 11-1/2 to 12 and compound. That indicates that other varieties exist but are not listed.

Here is the list courtesy 2016 Unitrade....still confused.

You pose another question wert with thinking it's 5i. Why can't there be a different perf combo with the deep rose variety?

I have checked mine and they all vary between 11.25 (an anomaly) and 12.9.

I have Robson Lowe's Encyclopedia of British Empire Postage Stamps" Part III The Maritime Provinces and James C. Lehr's "Postage Stamps and Cancellations of Prince Edward Island." Both list all the 3c printings (after the initial perf 9 1861 issue) of having the perforations varying between 11.5 and 12 on both sides, do to the poor quality perforation machine used by the printer. Apparently these can vary within a single sheet.

5g was a unique printing, the perforations on the sheet is a consistent 11 on the top and bottom, 11-1/2 on one side, and 12 on the other. It is a very recent addition to the catalogue.

So Robert's stamp could be a straight Scott/Unitrade #5.

This cover has my only odd-ball perforation of the PEI 2p, it is 11.25 x 11.5



The date is Dec 3, 1869.

Thanks BeeSee I always thought it was 11 1/2 or 12, would be an interesting stamp with three different perfs. So I guess it should be a comma instead of a hyphen in the unitrade book.

It would be more like 11.5-12 x 11.5-12 (examples: 11.5 x 12, 12 x 11.5, 11.5 x 11.5, 12 x 12, 11.5 x 11.75, 11.75 x 11.5, 11.75 x 11.75, 11.75 x 12, 12 x 11.75, etc.) for # 5 and 11 x 11.5-12 (examples: 11 x 11.5, 11 x 12, 11 x 11.75, etc.) for # 5g. Your 11.95 x 11.45 (12 x 11.5) would be # 5 rather than # 5g. I like your perforation gauge template. Where did you get it?

Hi jogil...I just drop a 600 DPI scan into my program called GIMP (Photoshop equivalent..and FREE to download)..Then I drag and drop the perf gauge over the stamp and adjust till I get the correct perf for a stamp.
