Does anyone know of a book/catalog/list that coordinates a cross reference of the Scott vs SG numbers?
Any type of list, happy to pay for, that tells me Scott #123 is SG #321.
Anything like this at all???

I don't know of one, and I'd be surprised to find that one exists, as this is just the kind of thing that Scott's is pretty intent on protecting as intellectual property. |

There have been quite a few threads here - some recent - on this question. |

GeoffHa;
Where do I find them?
Truth be told, I have a very difficult time navigating this wed site. I can never find what I am looking for unless it is a recent post. |

Hi
Creating a Scott-SG cross reference would be hard, if not impossible.
1. Scott breaks listings into sections where SG does not. 2. A color in Scott is not necessarily a color in SG. 3. Scott may list varieties that SG does not and vice versa. 4. Scott and SG copyright issues.
For my friend's store I created tables to help in breaking down collections for stock. In one case I created a multi-catalog cross reference. Take it from experience, even that one little cross reference took an inordinate amount of time. The main issue was the fact Scott may group a stamp issued over a couple of years under one listing and SG listed the same item in multiple places.

I was collecting Straits Settlements for a while and found a dealer who had some cross references in his price list.

Thanks all.
blcjr, I understand what you are saying. I don't expect to find a book with cross reference SG/Scott for the very reason you stated. However, as jbcev80 and angore stated, there are dealers out there that must have an extensive cross reference system to help buyers, especially in the USA, find a specific stamp. Actually, I found a dealer, in Great Britain, that lists his stamps for sale by SG and corresponding Scott numbers. Not every stamp, of course, but quite a few. Most early stamps up to the 70's and most pre decimal Machins. All very helpful. Thank you Arthur Ryan & Co.
I have no idea who is considered the "Big" dealer in Great Britain stamps. Surely, there is someone who stands out like Mystic does here in the USA. I'm just saying that whoever that dealer is, they should do the research, and put out a definitive price list of Great Britain stamps for sale, with cross reference SG and Scott numbers, much like Mystic does. |

Wouldn't it be easier, and without legal concerns, for the US collector particularly interested in GB stamps to buy both Scott and SG's GB volume? I suspect that's what most of us do. |

GeoffHa; "buy both Scott and SG's GB volume " If I understand you correctly, you are suggesting buying both the Scott and the SG stamp albums. The Scott album I am using cost me over $400USD. I never looked into a SG album so I have no idea what they cost. But I'm sure it's not cheep.
If you are suggesting buying both catalogue's. I have done that and that does not work very well. |

TerryMcAdams, that is exactly what I have been doing for the past 50 or so years. I collect the Netherlands, and since Scott is terrible I mainly use the NVPH special catalog. Even that does not suffice for some of the specialties so I have to get other catalogs like the one on the Japanese Occupation of the Dutch East Indies. Same for my Switzerland collection. Scott has just got main numbers, so I use the Zumstein. Even for my US collection of the Transportation Coils I have to rely on a PNC3 catalog - Scott only lists main numbers.

No, I was suggesting using a Gibbons catalogue and cross-referencing to Scott where you need to, recognising that Scott will necessarily cover only a fraction of what Gibbons does.

Welcome to the World Stamp Catalogues, which would take the space of my Condo. As a new member of this very important SC (Stamp Community), I figure if you need a specialized Country (or group of), this is a great investment. I have Scott's 2009 - 6 Cat. and they cost me a bundle in Canada and would upgrade unless my software is not. I did buy Canada's Unitrade which holds the Scott #s for my special Canada collection of stamps, FDC, etc. I will probably buy Gibbon's when I go through my extensive Great Britain collection, just to compare etc. A Stamp collector needs motivation (or reason)in the acquisition of new reference material and when I go through France.....well I might get their specialized cat. I would never buy catalogues to decorate my Stamp Room, This is a very interesting thread indeed. Thanks !Just want to participate, as a newbie (as you call it).....also am a frenchie - LOL René https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...p_catalogues |
