Henry Tolman II published a listing in 1984 ("Insurance Cancellations on United States Revenue Stamps of the 1862-1874 Issues"). I have a photocopy of it - I suspect I obtained it from the APRL at some point.

If you contact dealer Henry Gitner I believe he may have a photocopy of it for sale at a very reasonable price. I seem to recall seeing it in a box of literature at the NY show.

Eric Jackson also has the original inventory of the Tolman work. Price is $22.50.

Tolman died over 10 years ago. Siegel sold his collection in a series of sales in the 2006-07 time frame.

Henry's collections were auctioned by Siegel quite a few years ago. Henry passed away prior to those auctions. He was one of the great collectors of the mid and late twentieth century, a gentleman of the highest order.

Ah, sorry to hear that. I was going to contact him and see if I had his permission to use his numbering system for First Issue Insurance cancellations. I am working on a new online census of these cancellations. I do not know a lot about insurance cancellations but have slowly accumulated them over the years. The census will be freely available to all (non-commercial).

Dealers and others use his numbering system all the time for insurance company cancellations.

51studebaker - is there a way to access your online census (either now or in the future)?

psyprofret,
I am still developing the database, gathering images, and generating cancellation outline drawings. This effort is being done in a way that allows others to participate by adding/editing the database using a web browser. Dan (revenuecollector) has been kind enough to allow us to use some of his First Issue insurance images. If anyone would like to help, let me know and I will set up access for you.
I should have enough work done to publish the first release within the next week. It will be freely available for all to view on the Stamp Smarter website.

Edit; I have added a field in the database for the Tolman numbering. It can be hidden from view at any time if it becomes problematic. Of course there are new examples since Tolman published his list so I will also have a new, proprietary numbering system for each insurance cancellation example.

Hi Don - I would love to contribute to your database. I have quite a few insurance cancels myself.
