WAGER POOL ENDED. Thread preserved

World Stamp Show ... attendance wager pool

Clearly, lots of us are interested, so let's make it a little (and I mean only a little) more interesting.

1) Post your guess as to WSS NY 2016 total attendance.

2) Post your wager, eg, something you should have posted as a forum giveaway long ago.

3) Winner gets all and/or directs all to the philatelic charity of their choice.

Feel free to explain the mathematical mechanics of your bid, but please do not expect anyone to actually read that part of your post ;)

I cannot tell you in what form the final tally will be given (including/not volunteers, including/not exhibitors & staff, including/not real-time online auction bidders, etc). It is my intention that we go with the largest/total number APS releases for unique visitors. Feel free to nominate an arbitrator.

My bid is 36,000 total attendance, whatever 'total' means.

My wager is a Modern Postage Stamp Album (c1953, red hardcover). Zero stamps. Hinge remains & damage to US pages, but the ROTW pages are clean. Inside front & back cover decorated with 1953 NWF & Boys Town cindies.

These ground rules are subject to modification if most of us seem to agree with any suggestion anybody makes.

May the best SCFer win.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

I would guess 53,000 unique visitors.

I'll wait and see if anyone else plays before putting thought into an item for wager.

For reference, the American Stamp Dealer and Collector magazine of Nov/Dec 2015 reported the following for the 2006 show in Washington:

"Stationed at the entrance to the show were folks with hand-held
counters who clicked each time a person passed them by over the
eight days. Their clicks added up to almost 227,000 visitors. This
count included folks who may have come in and out several times
in the same day. To that end, show officials estimate that there
were actually about 85,000 unique individuals attending the show
during the eight days."

Before realizing this thread was here, I coincidentally searched today to see if any attendance figures had been announced. Of course, the answer was no. So I'll guess 77,000 unique visitors.

Other than the lengthy email letter from Wade Saadi on June 23 and the short informal note on July 6, both of which were reproduced in threads on this forum and neither of which contained much in the way of metrics on attendance or anything else for that matter, I haven't seen or heard anything official from the WSS consortium. The Saadi email included this statement:

" Waiting for a true count will be worth the delay in getting these legitimate numbers out in just a few more weeks."

No word since. I had a great time at the show and the anecdotal evidence suggests a successful show that was enjoyed by thousands of people. But for some strange reason, no urgency on the past of the show's organizers to release any official data.

If someone attended and was disappointed by anything, we've yet to hear (or hear anything memorable) from them.

Okay, I remember now: somebody didn't like the interior of the roof of the atrium.

The actual unique attendee numbers will be some small fraction of the (probably silly) projected attendance numbers.

Even those of us who are curious don't think it matters all that much, for reasons that include the changing topography of the hobby (online auctions, online sales, online clubs).

I thought there was enough curiosity to start this pool/thread, but that's me.

Cheers,
