The latest news suggests the two sides MAY agree to a 30 day cooling off period; hope they can at least agree on that. I purchased a P.E.I. UN #3 from an overseas dealer at a great price and was hoping it wouldn't get caught up in the shut-down but, thankfully, it arrived today. Needs to be sent to VGG for a certificate; but I will wait to see what transpires over the week-end.
With respect to the issues, I haven't studied the areas of disagreement; but I can comment on one issue, that being the demand that all new workers be allowed entry into the existing defined benefit pension plan. No-one anywhere should be entitled to this. The DB pension plans work wonderfully well for people who paid into them in past years; but, in today's competitive world, they are archaic and a huge uncertain burden on employers.
Canada Post is on solid ground on this issue and the Union should give their heads a shake. At least
Canada Post isn't cancelling the existing plan (which would be wrong); all they are doing is denying entry to new employees. These are conditions of employment which the employer should be entitled to make. About the wage parity issue for urban vs rural workers, not sure about this one as I don't know the facts.
