I picked this inexpensive cover up from
ebay recently. It was described as Aylmer (Quebec) to Nova Scotia.
However, when I received it, I was pleased to see that the origin was not Alymer, but also in Nova Scotia, from the town of Aylesford, dated May 16, 1873. It was addressed to Lawrencetown, NS, and arrived there the same day.
Another bonus was that the cover included the contents, a short note as shown below.
The addressee, Dr. L.R. (Leander Rupert) Morse was born in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia in 1833. He became a teacher, and earned enough money to pay for his medical education. He went to Boston on a schooner to attend Harvard Medical School and graduated in 1861 with his medical degree. He then practiced in Lawrencetown until he died in 1903. Four of his seven children also became doctors, including a son, also named Leander Rupert, who survived the Halifax explosion of 1917.
As for the stamp, it is Scott 37 with the lower left guide dot. It is perf 11.9, but I am not sure what the exact shade is.
Some covers really tell an interesting story.
