Scott 51 - Newfoundland - Blob.

Hi guys..Was surprised to see so many varieties in NFLD stamps...Look at these stamps and notice the first one has no blob and the other 2 have them..

This should make it a constant..??

Robert, it looks like there is one on the other side as well, only not as pronounced. Do you have a scan of one without "The Blob"?
Also, on the third stamp I see what looks like a guide dot and a possible plate crack ( or maybe a paper tear ? )on the lower left corner.

Excellent observation, and thanks for the posting. Neither of my mint stamps have this but I will check. I see nothing in the literature on this either.

I think your hypothesis of it being a constant variety is viable. There were many specks and issues with plates in the printing that would have carried over as the printed the sheets. British American Bank Note, in Montreal, engraved stamp.

Umber brown (1887 per Boggs and Walsh) and violet brown (1896) colors of this stamp. the latter had 20,000 printed (unknown for earlier color).
Boggs lists that the latter issue had "brighter colors, clearer impressions and yellowish, instead of white gum" (though he has been known to be incorrect). You might have examples not of a constant variety but a difference from the 1887 versus 1896 printings...
