Hi Ragner,

After tax paid stamps were no longer required as of June 23, 1959, many tobacco manufacturers began using "in lieu" labels. This is similar to the same situation with match and medicine revenue stamps, when they were no longer required in July, 1883 and "match and medicine facsimile labels" were used. Additionally, certain packages of cigarettes for example were tax exempt.

The catalog illustrates hundreds of these types of labels, and more.
