Newfoundland Queen Victoria Scott 80A Help

I am deconstructing an old album that I acquired and found a Queen Victoria Scott 80a, the 1c deep green. I already had Scott 80, the yellow green, so I could make a valid comparison of color.

I noticed a difference in size, however, and my Scott Specialized (2011)and Unitrade (2005) are both silent on the size(s). The yellow green is 19 x 25-1/2 mm and the deep green is 19 x 25 mm.

Is this size difference the norm or do I have an oddball? Any thoughts are welcome.

Donald, could a half a millimeter not be accounted for due to shrinkage of the paper?

Donald, just measured my #80 and got 26x19 and the #79 was 26x19.5. Need some more to chime in with measurements. Maybe it might be a wet/dry printing thingy.

I thought of paper shrinkage, but do not know how the images were oriented on press. If the image was perpendicular to the web direction, then I could accept paper shrinkage. I believe that the paper fibers are normally oriented in the web direction and that shrinkage in the same direction is usually minimal. Shrinkage across the web seems more likely.

My experience has all been in gravure using roll stock, so I may be all wet when it comes to offset.

Thanks for the feedback and nice to see someone else observed the same phenomenon. It is quite visible to the eye, even at 0.5 mm.

Thank you for the posting--all I collect is Newfoundland so nice to see.

Posting an image would be helpful, so do that if you can.

In general, the best publication to use is Walsh's Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalog, as it has more details than Unitrade. This stamp came in yellow green and blue green and the EKU is June 18, 1898--(though Boggs listed only green, many people debate the various shades. I personally don't get too hung up as time has a huge impact on color determination) .

Both stamps were 12 x 12 perf and with over 14.25 million stamps printed.

As far as the measurement, I have not seen anything in the literature on this variation but its not clear to me are you talking about the image size or the stamp size? I would think the ideas above about shrinkage (especially if they are used stamps), or time would explain a wide variation, even 0.5mm. I'll check a few of mine--i have about 15 used and 5 mint versions.

Hope no one minds a little tangent, but on the topic of this stamp, here is a cover to share of its use.

This is a very unusual use from 1905, for several reasons.

It was sent in an envelope and stationary from "Government House, St Johns Newfoundland".

It has a rarely seen split ring cancel of "Duckworth Street St Johns".

The sender was a father to his daughter in Scotland and its all about him congratulating her on her marriage and giving advice etc. The letter which was enclosed has been kept with it. excerpt is "Do not forget my child, that you must endeavor with all your might. A man can excuse much in a wife that is kind and sweet tempered; but no man can respect a wife that is ill tempered".

For years that I have had this, I never notice the sender but recently research has shown it to be by William MacGregor, who was the Governor of Newfoundland back then. quite a surprise.

Non taken..I give you credit for collecting a non native stamp from another country..I have collected a descent NFLD collecting, but still far away from perfect.
