jgtyler, welcome to Stamp Community Forum. This stamp is from the Soviet-occupied area of post-WWII Germany. It is from East Saxony and was issued in November of 1945. The series of this design is somewhat popular among Germany specialists because of the paper, gum, and printing varieties.

Thanks bookbndrbob, now I have to figure out if it's a 15n2 or 15n2a. Anyone now what they mean by pointed or squat 3?

jgtyler,

This stamp comes in 10 different variations of type, paper and gum. Michel also lists 15 different major errors and 13 different major plate flaws. It's a fun stamp for flyspeckers!

There are two different types. A Type 1 has the top of the numeral 3 coming to a point on the right and a Type 2 has a flat topped numeral. It depends on the plate position. Here's an example of both.

I assume the "pointed 3" is a Type 1 and the "squat 3" is a Type 2.

Your image is small but it looks like a pointed 3 to me.

Hope that helps,
Dan

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.

"Pointed" at left, "squat" at right. It refers to the upper right edge of the "3".
