An interesting 1850 letter from a Georgia Democrat state representative to his wife concerning a legislative battle between his party and the Whigs:

Postmarked in the then-state capitol, in the dead of winter, and sent to the university town of Athens. I'll be there in ten days to visit my daughter (class of 2017). Is the cover endorsed "mail"? I wonder what other options the sender had at the time for dispatch.

I live about 40 miles from Milledgeville and have seen the old state capitol building many times. Milledgeville is a very pleasant college town. It is also the location of the state sanitorium and as a child was often threatened with taking me to Milledgeville and leaving me there.

The cover is very interesting.

The entire content is fascinating and superbly styled, if somewhat chatty and distant for a letter from husband to wife. I hope she liked politics and staying home in a quiet province rather than in the hub of government. "Mr. More … died last night, the cause of his death is intemperance [alcoholism], that monster tyrant, which has slain so many victims—" Can anyone make out the last sentence? "I am so engaged in systematizing for the [???] of the democracy and the national convention that I need [???]"

Looks like: "I'm so engaged in systemizing (whatever that means?) for the need(s?) of this democracy and this Nashville(?) Convention that I need____". Just can't make out the last word at all.

" ... systematizing for the success of the democracy and the Nashville convention that I must close". I think!

Thanks for the replies. I believe this short biography retrieved from Catalogue Trustees, Officers, Alumni and Matriculates-University of Georgia, at Athens Georgia from 1785 to 1906 may belong to the Gentleman who wrote the letter.
