BTW - he was a shah rather than a king. Shah Pahlavi - he was shah for many years and there are numerous sets with his portrait on. |

91stang - cool, the Shah Pahlav stamps is reversed or "mirrored" - have not seen that before. Presume these are quite rare? |

edw kim: as mentioned earlier in the thread, persi.com is the place to find good information about the early Persian stamps. A few years ago, I bought the 2002 Persiphila Standard Catalogue, for the Iran-Qajar dynasty which covers about all of the classic period. There is a $200 catalogue available. But the softbound copy of my catalogue remains at $35 plus shipping. |

Thread Bumped: Dormant 6 years. Iran : Novice. Here is my lovely collection of Counterfeits. I fear I may have 7 genuine stamps, hiding amongst them, can any Iran spec members cast an eye over these 7 and offer an opinion please? Genuine? |

The 1924 and 1925 surcharges are genuine. The first 6ch has the spotting feature covered by the cancel, but I don't see fake cancels being added to these. That cancel looks genuine to me.
The 5sh green is a forgery. In the genuine, the right side innermost frameline of the vignette is extremely fine or gone and the frameline outside of it is also very much thinner than the outer one and also tends to be gone. The forgeries have a clear innermost frameline like this one. Genuine mint stamps are somewhat scarce. Someone must have added forged cancels to the forgeries(?), but the few used (not at all expensive used) I've found have been genuine.
EDIT: Edw Kim's stamp is genuine, if anyone was still wondering. |

Thank you very much HB Saved. I'll keep a set of forged myself, mark (pencil) "faux" on the back of the others and into the swaps / duplicates. With the 6ch blue, you can see the distinct shade diff with the counterfeits. Must say, impressed with the 5sh forgeries, they look dangerous. |

You are always welcome, rod. That 5 shahi forgery seems to be in any worldwide collection you might run across.
Any other early Iran/Persia that are burning questions? |

Quote: Any other early Iran/Persia that are burning questions? Not right at the moment HB, 1. Very rare to get these stamps in "swaps" 2. I shy away from deep collecting, figuring it's a bit like Turkiye, one needs to be dedicated and able to afford the harder items. Needless to say, I know where to come for advice |

1. You have careful trade friends, then. I don't have many duplicates of genuine stamps myself except of the very cheapest and easiest to find. 2. Aha, but you're deep collecting well enough, especially in your info and image collections. For me, the old Iranian stuff was always a blank wasteland in my album, one of the things that I've been picking up recently in small country collections. I have nothing rare, but the finds of things of better than average value have been surprising.
Really got hooked on it (with a heavy preference toward used stamps, as ever) helped by (rather expensive) but excellent references out there, the Persiphila catalog(s), that are very thorough. There's still a fair amount of genuine stuff to be found buried in the lots full of forgeries and reprints. But you do need the references. |
