I haven't 'yet' identified an experimental orange brown 3 cent 1851-57, in my collection.
They're only from, as far as I know, plate 1 late. And only from the first couple months of that plates use

Plate 1L has many varieties of recuts, shifted transfers, engravers slips etc. This state of plate one was in use for more than three years. That means...lots of material!
Another plus is the stampsmarter.com site plating initiative has nearly a complete set of plate 1L images. It makes for an interesting treasure hunt.

The stamp pictured I liked the color and the quality of the image. I've plated it as 6R1L.
Hopefully, even with my poor images, you can see...the guide dot upper right. The recut line in the upper left triangle. Also, the gouging at the top of the upper right diamond block and the label.

I believe these are enough to identify the position of this stamp. I always say, "beware of my conclusions, for I am no expert."

I agree, 6R1L. Have you seen an EOB?

They are 11A and 26. The last 26 is from 56R28 and has the "Big Neck Flaw"

Here is an experimental orange brown, plated 1R1L, acquired from Dr. Bill Amonette, and colorized by him, shown next to two shades of orange brown (#10A).

The experimental orange brown ink typically has a waxy appearance resulting in poor definition of the inner background oval, as can be seen in the left half of the 4800 DPI image.

Thank you, Classic Coins. I had no idea what ExpOB or EOB was until you posted the pictures. I wish posters would be kind to the uninitiated!

Peter, just ask. In my defense, my first sentence of the original post was..."I haven't 'yet' identified an experimental orange brown 3 cent 1851-57, in my collection."
I used abbreviations after that.

Stampcrow, my apologies. I saw it in the thread title and read plum over your first sentence. I need to quit reading these things when I am half asleep I guess.

Hah, you are correct though, my title was abbreviated. Sorry.

I'm glad you checked out the thread. I've been on a sharp learning curve with the 3 cent stamp. Not sure I've even reached "novice' yet.

Stampcrow, I enjoy this type of philately. I do not know much about this particular issue, but talking about it helps me with the stamps I research.
