Hi guys...Take a look at this Scott 1011...This Jacques Cartier stamp has a mix of upper case and lower case in his name..Look at Cartier..All are lower case except for the "C" and, and, and the "i"..it is in upper case..Notice the "i" has no dot above it..weird.

Robert

Robert, I am not that familiar with printing terms. Why is the "i" in upper case?

I was asking you why you think that it is an upper case "i"? To me upper case would be this: "I", and it clearly is a small "i" to me. Look at the name of the designer, Paquin. He spelled the I in his name without a dot also ( I think - very hard to see ).

France's version of this stamp has the dot over the "i"

My scan of Canada's version clearly shows that the dot has been pixilized out (the small whitish square withing the yellow box, the angled lines touch the corners of the square) where the dot would have appeared.

I believe that it is not an upper case "i" but is a lower case "i".

NOTE: both images were cut from the original scans to make new jpeg files, then these new files were enlarged 500 times. Wert - try the same with your 1011 and let us know the result.

No dot in the "i" of my used copy either. I think that the artist / typesetter just meant it to be that way.

OK guys, I know this is a very important subject, so let us start correctly. Are we sure that the dots are missing on all of these stamps?

They simply don't put a dot on the I on all the 1011 , I don't see why make a big case of it

Not a big deal..But when I was in school, we were ALWAYS taught to dot the "i" when it was in lower case...Guess you think our Government has the right to deviate from proper English...oh well...haha

Of course it's a mistake , you may complain to Canada Post and I will support it, but it will not give more value to the stamp, they all with the same mistake .

Just for fun, this is not the reason but let's say for the fun of it :

Fact

1- Jacques Cartier is a person name,
2- A French guy,
3- In French they are no mistake on a person name,
4- Jacques Cartier was not putting a dot on the I of his signature.........

Surely it depends on what font is being used. It may be that the font chosen did not have a dot over a lower case I in which case it would be a deliberate design decision. Is there any info from the post office as to what font was actually used. ?

AQ is quite right. It's a design issue and of no significance.

My mint copies do not have the dot on the Canadian stamp. It IS ODD that the France stamp has it, as it is a joint issue with a common design.
