What is the definition of a stamp oddity? Is not every stamp unique at some level of 'zoom'? Are we headed for saying any difference, at any zoom level, can be called a new variety or oddity?

I think we need a new definition of oddity or variety. Obviously the marketplace places emphasis on 'striking' examples of varieties. So I am offering this definition; a stamp is an oddity if you can see the difference with an unaided eye, at arm's length, under office lighting.

Good point Don, but there are varieties that need a closer look more than the naked eye..An example would be the Scott 479 (RED over BLUE)....Correct..?

Hi Robert,
I am down with whatever the definition ends up being. I just think it needs defining before we end up with catalogs that are 24 volumes big because technology has allowed infinite numbers of varieties.
In 40 years from now technology might allow stamp analysis that makes what we do now look like the stone age. At some point there has to be a line drawn that describes a 'normal' stamp vs. a new variety.
