OK, maybe an inking issue, but I thought it was interesting. I am transferring these from one album to another, and checking them more closely. This 1892 has a different accent from all of the others:

In all of my other copies, the accent is an inverted triangle. Several versions are shown below. What gives?

Of course, it also has this mark across the oar on the left side. Just an odd stamp ...

Maybe just a dirty plate or could be a sign of wear on the plate, who knows? Definitely worth keeping, looking for more and maybe even writing up. It happens surprisingly often on some early stamps.

Hi Partime,
The SG France & Colonies catalogue 2010 adds a note after this series, stating that many varieties can be found due to a failure to print letters or parts of letters, so I would assume these differing accents would fall into that category. There are various spelling mistakes on 'REUNION' listed, all with decent CV, especially mint.
Hope this helps.

Actually in French they are no spelling mistake in "nom propre" in English "nom propre" will probably translate by Country name, person name, in general, name that start with a capital letter.

Also in word all in Capital like "REUNION" the accent is not needed

Oh yes, that is quite well understood. But with this issue, there are versions specifically identified with and without the accent, and there are other items listed where REUNION is spelled differently (RUENION, REUINON, etc.) There may even be some where it is inverted. Some are quite valuable.

In any case, I have a stamp show this weekend, and I will do a little closer looking at these issues. Thanks for all of the comments.

I guess those mistakes have been made my local persons who never learn to write in French. They go with the pronunciation only. Reunion is also meeting in French, I can't believe someone who have finished elementary school make such a mistake. I personally never learn English at school and I considerately do better than that, at least I try.
