On the THRACE stamps they are a new find for me and have no reference points to say real or fakes ,hope to find info. over the next few weeks.

Please post any information.
I intend (when time permits) to use the Rossiter Stamp Atlas, then read up on the 1913 Balkan situation. At the moment, makes my head spin.
I have the full set Turkish stamps overprinted with the Thrace Greek occupation.
I may even get the time to browse the ONEPS library online, see if there is anything there.

Here's that envelope - I'd be curious to hear what it says. There are a couple sizes/varieties:

Michael,
here is a representative of his treatment.
The preamble discussed overall history and points of each issue, for example the design of the Round Stamp Impression designed by the Calligrapher Mehmed Bey.
I buy direct from Mr. Birken, but he has challenging payment options, no Paypal etc. You may wish to source from Cyprus : James Bendon.

The old Higgins & Gage catalogue lists the same three registered envelopes.

Their 1981 prices were (in US dollars):

Size a - $15 mint, $30 used

Size b - $17.50 mint, $35 used

Size c - $20 mint, $40 used

They give exactly the same sizes and call them a, b, c rather than A, B , C.

Hi Rod,

I liked the reference to the "NEW - Final Volume" of the Coles & Walker handbooks which was published back in 1995.

Rod222's Constantinople 1871 Market Fees show weights from 1 to 24 "D." Are these "Ds" pennyweights? If pennyweights, it is 20 pennyweights to the troy ounce, and about 10% more of an ounce in avoirdupois, or 1.55517384 grams. What was being weighed? Gold, silver, medicine? The weight is a little light for food, except for thought.

abctoo,
Absolutely no idea here, I am breaking new ice for me, with revenues, and to broadcast my ignorance, I was presuming the strikes were hand stamps by weighing officials. Your questions open up a whole new investigation.
I'll post whenever news comes to hand.
If these were National, one would expect silk, furs, tobacco, spices and cotton. However being Constantinople municipal usage, whom knows?

Hi floortrader,

I believe the first of your Thrace stamps is also a variety.

These surcharges were made in two parts:

1. The first two lines read "Administration of Autonomous "Western Thrace" on all values.

2. The bottom line has the new value.

These two parts were applied separately (as described in Scott).

As a result, there exist varieties with one or other part missing (such as your second stamp without the first two lines).

You can also find stamps with one or other part inverted.

Your first stamp appears to have the first two lines inverted and the value the normal way up.

New Reprint?
But where would we be without them? for me, made some sense out of the mind numbing aray of Pmks with squiggly lines.
I can see why some collectors like the challenge of Turkey.
What an enterprise!

Would we know the approximate date line of usage of these stamps?

To rod222:
Would you be kind enough to post a scan that is 300 dpi both horizontally and vertically of the Arabian Government revalued postage due? The enlargements I tried to make were just too distorted for any real accuracy. Thanks.
