Flyspecking the 1909 Turkey Type A21
Tughra Reshad.
Damage to bottom of Crescent.
The plates for all values of this issue were made by erasing the inscriptions, etc.,
from the central circles on the plates of the 1908 issue, Sc A19, and inserting the
inscription, etc., as in ScA21. In erasing the old centres more or less damage
was done to the lower edge of the crescent; this damage varies in different
stamps. In most values there are a number of minor varieties owing to the
different ways in which the " tougra," or triple signature, and inscription are
placed.
This is particularly noticeable in the plates of 1 and 2 piastre., one variety
having the " tougra " turned so that the three strokes are vertical and under the
centre of the crescent.
Second plates were eventually made for the 5 par., 10 par., 20 par., and 1 pias,
in which the crescent has its lower edge intact. In these plates the central part is
alike throughout the plate, and there are no minor varieties. The second plate of
the 5 par. does not seem to have been issued except with the surcharge " 2 par."
etc., for use with printed matter.
Damage to bottom of Crescent (Amplified by apparent thickening of printer's Ink)
