Nice stamp Rod - and even nicer work on coming up with the details of all the design issues - very good stuff! After seeing the scan, unfortunately, I am inclined to agree with your assessment that it is a forgery. Sorry about that. Even before all the design element issues - the color is off. The real stamp is black printing on grey/beige. Your stamp has a bit too much yellow/bistre in it. (I have a similar forgery) While there are some essays with some similar colors, the actual stamp has no yellow in it. You can also compare to the block of Scott #58 - see page 76 of the thread. The design elements are the same for all of the 25 piastre values... There are 2 other design elements that look very 'off', as highlighted here: (I'll let you add the arrows to your vertigo-inducing/blinking image of the 2 stamps!) |

Thank you, Michael, nice to have your experienced appraisal. Quote: The design elements are the same for all of the 25 piastre values... I thought that the case, hence the value in drilling down on one stamp design for the future. Only the second forgery from my dealer in 10 years, and I'm sure he wasn't to know, I shan't return it to preserve a good relationship. Dr. Andreas Birken's monographs have already paid for themselves. Great reference material. My Turkey dealer, is not answering emails, so my search for the Isfila general catalogue remains. |

Rod, Quote: ...my search for the Isfila general catalogue remains. Which catalog would that be? I have some sources. |

Hi, Postmaster GS. Michael may confirm, I think it is the "Ottoman Turkish Isfila Catalogue 2018" or similar, I have never seen it.
Circa $90 + shipping from Turkey?

Rod,
That's what I thought. I haven't seen it for sale at any of my normal philatelic literature sources, but check your e-mail. |

I have no idea what you're talking about with regard to a catalog. The new 2018 general Isfila catalog has just come out. You can buy it on their website for $28 + shipping. I saw it - nice - but hardcover... I thought it was the specialized catalogs you were searching for. Which are not available for sale, other than the Duloz one, if you buy the main 2009 catalog. Currently $7.69 + shipping. This is the one I thought you were trying to get?? (Not sure why pix is coming out sideways??) |

Well then your life is easy & full of choices. You can buy the new hardcover one or the 2016 version, which is soft cover & 2 volumes. I prefer that format to the hardcover - easier to work with. I was disappointed that the new 2018 edition was hardcover. Just a fun picture - I was in Ankara the other day. This is from Anitkabir - the tomb/mausoleum of Ataturk. This was the one panel in the Ataturk museum there that had anything to do with stamps - a bit disappointing - seems Ataturk was not a collector?! |

Michael, At least they had some Philately on display, we rarely see that. Quote: Well then your life is easy & full of choices. I'll opt for the 2016 off ebay or likewise. (Agreed I like softcovers Ala Michel etc) Isfila demands you join, wants your name phone number, your Aunt Mary's dress size. Not up to that sort of nonsense. They won't be getting my shekels. ...and what's this $28, then up to $128 on ebay? Sheesh. |

Micahel - have you visited Patak's Museum of Innocence in Istanbul, which he funded by his Nobel Prize winnings?
Rod - if it helps, I believe your Aunt Mary was a trim size 10, due to a judicious combination of fags and surfing. |

Geoff - I had not even heard of it until now. Looks interesting. I will put in on my list. I tend to avoid that area of the city like the plague - kind of a long trip from my house - but next time I'm there, I will try to stop by & see it. I don't feel that bad - it seems it only opened about 5-6 years ago - there are many places I have yet to visit! (I still have not seen the new palace in Ankara - and Erdogan has not invited me as yet?!)
And please, let's leave Rod's Aunt Mary out of this. She does not want her size or vices disclosed, as it would reveal the fact that she is a wild & crazy lady. Much more exciting than her nephew... |

Yes, it does - there was some film of it in a recent BBC programme, in which Alan Yentob trotted around Istanbul with Pamuk (not Patak, which makes spices!). I don't know the geography, of course!
No, Mary was never a keen philatelist ... |

1855 Constantinople to Marseilles. 1. What would the "10" suggest? 2. Care to guess what the cover shall sell for (my local ebay) ? I think $25 AUD Backstamped Marseilles , elapsed time 12 days. |

Nice steamer marking Rod.
I guess the "10" is a charge marking for the delivery in Marseilles as I don't see a P.D. (paid to destination) marking. |
