Recent purchase. Cover from Mongtze Indochina too Smyrne.Addressed to Mr.Paul Gaudin who was Director of the Smyrne railway Co.An avid archeolgist also,he donated many antiquities to the Istamboul museum,Louvre museum.Possibly a colleague and fellow engineer working on the Indochina Yunnan line at the time that sent the letter. The cover is interesting because of the Mongtzé cancel. Perhaps during the construction of the railway many artefacts were discovered.Paul Gaudin on one of the sites. |

Lovely cover P12. Mr. Gaudin apparently suffered the ignorance of early archaeology, often using Spolia in construction of his railways.

I have a hard time understanding this. If memory serves me correctly, these have been offered over the past couple of months, price reduced from around $360 ? to $165. Poland Post offices in the Levant apparently a Catalogue value of $877 AUD. Why would the vendor not take the time to get a certificate? Surely the lot would have been snapped up, if so. |

Latest Edition of the Middle East Philatelic Journal has arrived. Topics: (Which includes an advert request for Sand Dunes, and Sahara Republic stamps, a surprise! and right up my alley) |

I have that Polish offices set. If memory serves, I paid like $15-20 for it. Spent alot of time researching after that to determine if forgery or real, and eventually just left it - without coming to any conclusion. The majority being offered in the market are forgeries - and I bought my set assuming it was fake - just to study.
I wouldn't even know who to send the set to get it expertized - maybe Sismondo in Canada? If the seller is in Australia, likely a similar problem, if they even care... |

Nice cover P12, I'll have to see if I can find the Jerusalem Pmk in my catalogues. Quote: I wouldn't even know who to send the set to get it expertized - That surprises me Michael, I'd ask ONEPS should I be fortunate enough to have something of value to be expertised. In fact, I may ask if the Opts have been focussed on any past ONEPS Journals... Thanks for your passing on your experience. |

Question about a stamp series that - incredibly - I do not believe has been mentioned yet in 93 pages! National Defense series. Issued in 1941. 5 values - from 10k to 2 lira. Listed in Isfila as M7-M11. High cv - app 2011 values $650 mint & $265 used for the series. My entire collection - only 2 of the 5 values: Anybody have any more info about these? They must be extremely scarce - you never see them come up for sale. (I've looked!) Any info would be greatly appreciated! |

Thanks for the fast reply Rod. Guessing that's a page from McDonald? Adds a tiny bit more - did not know there was a 2nd color of the 1lira. Plus, it seems to list 8 denominations? And the part that says 'Part 1' is also interesting - Isfila lists these as 'Type II' - with the very common Type I stamps. (The 5 denomination set with the soldier with rifle - Isfila #M2-M6.
My questions are why were they printed - a 2nd national defense series in the same year? Obviously a very small print run - the Type 1 stamps are very common - there were lots of them. So why the 2nd version? How many were printed? How long were they in use?? |

Guessing that's a page from McDonald? Correct, Michael. simply offering information as read. Your questions are above and beyond my knowledge. If you care to place your queries in a suitable format, I am happy to send to the editor of O.N.E.P.S. for the experts opinions. From my understanding, after reading McDonald National Defence arrived in 1924 8 values Again in 1924 P12 7 values The 3 you see in the scan were a circular seal 30.5mm 192??? Then your type as queried 194? 6 values Then 1941-1944 soldier and map of Turkey (These stamps were used as a postal surtax, AND fiscally, Postal surtax was obligatory certain times of the year) Hope this helps. |

Not seen these prior. I'll have to look them up. Fondatrions Pieuses = Pious Foundations. Suggestion: McDonald #12 (Values [4 Piastres] Reversed in the corners) The written 4, is on the bottom. |
