The 21st of September is the International Day of Peace or World Peace Day. 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Year of Peace in 1986. Let's see if we can find Peace Doves in our albums; they are symbols of peace, freedom and love. (Diverse pigeon species and pigeons who carry the mail could flock to another thread.) Maxicard issued by the UN office in Vienna and logo for 1986 on USSR stamp of that year..

Hi Rod, You are quite right about the many stamps with Doves sketched by Picasso - I hope they turn up here. My favorite is the one he did in 1962, the Dove on a pile of military rubble.

Hi Rod, Really great to have all those Picassos!, and the info. The dove breed is the Mailänder Lockentaube which might translate into 'the Milanese with the curl of feathers'; this breed usually also has feathered feet which you see well on the Russian sheet, but not when the bird is in flight. Bulgaria, 40 years after the October revolution.

Canada make a nice engraved for the millenium , come in a metal box with a not so beautiful holographic stamp. I don't know why peoples use the dove as symbol of peace. it's a very aggressive bird.

According to the biblical story (Genesis 8:11), a dove was released by Noah after the flood in order to find land; it came back carrying a freshly plucked olive leaf a sign of life after the Flood and of God's bringing Noah, his family and the animals to land.

I agree, that is one beautiful Canadian Stamp.
It stands out as one of the best emissions globally that year.

Happy International Day of Peace!

Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp depicting a female figure wearing a laurel wreath and holding a pomegranate and a key as an allegory of "Peace and Abundance," plus a peace dove and a map of Europe, designed by G. Ebinger, engraved by Léon Janssens, and issued by Belgium on October 26, 1953 to benefit children's welfare, Scott No. B544.
