I'm curious about this envelope, which has a non-U.S. (British?) stamp and a U.S. postmark.

Was it sent through U.S. domestic mail using foreign postage, or does the cancel right over the stamp reveal a foreign origin? The cancel reads "A Happy Christmas The Post Office".

Your picture is too far away to see what the cancel reads, but obviously it is British. As far as I know the US Post Office never used that type of cancel. The stamp is definitely British - only they are permitted to omit the country's name from their stamps.

The cancel seems to have been applied in Edinburgh, Scotland.

British Stamp.
British "Slogan" Postmark. Part of which you will come across on 1000's of British "Machin" stamps.

Issued on a yearly basis the GB slogan cancel would have been applied to many, many millions of letters, cards etc

I don't know why I thought "Pittsburgh" when I saw that postmark and didn't think of Edinburgh.
Well, I learned something: I didn't realize that British stamps didn't have to contain a country name.
Thanks everyone!

Instead of the name, they always have the head of the Queen (or King previously). On pictorial stamps look for that little silhouette in the corner - that's the equivalent of the country name. Occasionally, if the Queen is the subject of the main design, the head in the corner won't be there as well.
