Hi everyone. I am new to the forum and I need some help with identifying some stamps. I inherited a collection from my grandfather and I have identified some stamps using the internet, michel and scott books. This is my first post so I hope I do it correctly. I have attached an image of a stamp from the collection but it has no writing or country of origin on it. I am assuming it is an old german stamp as the majority of them are. I will post more images of the collection soon. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Austrian newspaper stamp, depicting Mercury. Should be blue - perhaps it's your photo. Comes on enamelled paper (Feb 1908), thin, transparent paper (1909) and thick, smooth paper (1910). 'Minimal monetary value. |

and they colour is right Hi area66, You are on the right lines but are not quite right. I believe you are referring to H&G Austria KX30 which is a PTPO postal card ("stamped to order postcard" in the UK), not a newspaper stamp. The heading "newspaper stamp" in the catalogue here refers to the die (i.e. the design of the stamp) not to a single stamp. The "KX" prefix to the number is given at the start of the PTPO Postal Card section and is not repeated for each item except in the price supplements. This stamp has clearly not been cut out from a postcard and I believe it's a cut-out from a PTPO wrapper, H&G Austria KE7, which is also from 1908. The complete wrapper was priced at 25c used in 1977, 50c used in 1982. H&G only lists and gives prices for complete postal stationery items and not single stamps or cut-outs. |

Wow, You guys have been super helpful. Really knowledgeable!
Thank you GeoffHa, area66, nigelc and rod222.
Can I post some pics of some pages on this thread for you guys to look at?
I have a few pages of "older" stamps early 1900's and late 1800's.
The newer stuff has been easier to find. Its the older stamps im having trouble finding info on. So many little variables.
This stamp collection is a fair size I think. If I took pics of everything there would be 50 images :) ... Is there a way I can post a link to a site like photobucket so you folks can peruse through the whole collection?
Thanks again for all your help

Mike, in my humble opinion, you have a collection, which would represent what a collector (a worldwide collector) would have in his pages after collecting for some years.
I think your Grandad had a penchant for lovely SON (Socked on the nose) postal cancellations, the postmarks on the Belgian sunday tabs, are delicious.
Your early German first page looks promising, may be some value there.
A basic pot-pourri of half decent stamps, with good husbandry in stock pages.

Not seen the British Guiana Summary Jurisdiction Revenues before. They look like they are Perf 15 They come in Wmk and unwatermarked flavours, in year 2000 they were estimated in prices around $2 to $10 each. Very nice.
Your Antigua 3 penny Revenue, (1870 or 1876) depending on Wmk attracts a value around $4 -$10
Query: Perhaps members here could identify for me, the "Francziska Fanny" stamps, never seen them before.

Nice stuff Mike! I've never seen the British Guiana 'Summary jurisdiction' (2nd last image) stamps before. Probably law court / fiscal stamps of some sort - and might be interesting for anyone in that camp. In general it seems the German Eagles on your first page is most interesting monetary wise, the first stamp issues of the newborn Germany. The 2 Kreuzer orange is probably around 200usd if its from the 1st Eagle issue with a small shield. There is a very small possibility - but quite unlikely - it's from the 'large shield' issue, which would imply a 4-figure catalog value. We would need a much better scan to tell
edit - Rod just beat me in commenting on the Guiana and Germany stamps.... |
