I'll add my 2 cents. Depends on what Catalogue you wish to employ. All Great Britain stamps. Interesting Postmarks for me, top to bottom, left to right. #3 "squared circle" (Looks like) Postmark of BATH (Somerset) and #8 Postmark for printed matter "FS" = Foreign Service. #4 is a revenue stamp.

BigMel, your "Manchester" Postmarked Scott 78 with "EX 52" apparently is not listed in the Fabulous ! Brit Postmarks database. You may have a "new find" You may wish to send a nice scan of that stamp, to the webmaster, to assist us all http://philatelicweb.com/pmks/ |

Just a theory... The postmark could be CHICHESTER which was one of only a handfull of railway stations using a squared circle cancel. The EX 52 could refer to the railway exchange (EX) at Basingstoke (code 52) which would be on the route to London. The rail stations that used squared circle postmarks are Aysgarth, Chester, Chichester, Crewe, Farnborough, Gloucester, Lewes, Par, Perranwell, Rugby, Swanley, Wellington College and Worthing. |

If the 52 EX is Basingstoke, could it be Winchester, which is on the same railway line, whereas Colchester isn't? |

The postmark is indeed Manchester. The squared circle marks at this time were using two letter codes with a number following. According to Allan Oliver, he has EX52 ( my copy ) and XX1 in use. The period of use that he has recorded was July 27 1882 to Dec 1 1888. My example now moves the date a day earlier and is the earliest recorded use of this type on record. He has updated the database to reflect this. I am not a postmark collector and would never have noticed this if not for this forum. |

Quote: According to Allan Oliver, he has EX52 ( my copy ) and XX1 in use. Yes I saw the XX1, I must have missed the EX 52 Thanks for posting back the results, and with your little bit, expanding the world database records. |
