I believe that Stanley Gibbons decides whether to incorporate a new variety into its catalogue if somone can produce three examples of an unlisted variety. I know someone who has tried it with British King George V £1 black St George and th Dragon stamps in which the spear crosses the border. |

Yea you would definitely need a couple examples of a stamp to prove a plate variety vs an inking variety. That said, there is clearly something in general consistently going on with this stamp/plate. |

This is mostly from stress cracks in bent printing plates. There are some instances where some specialist collectors are paying premiums for some WWII Canadian King George VI plate blocks without plate cracks. |

Thanks for the explanation. These resemble the hairline cracks on Plate 3 of the US 1c stamp of 1851 (actually 1856 for plate 3). Very very similar, and probably from a similar cause.
Coming from the point of view of wanting to find a stamp with plate cracks, I find it pretty amusing that one would value stamps without them more. Heh. |

Robert,
I have heard that generally - all of the Admiral Issue stamps, especially the lower denominations can be found with hairlines. This probably due to the heavy use of the printing plates.
You should send an email to Leo from the BNAPS Admiral Study Group and I'm sure he would be happy to answer. He is an excellent resource for all Admiral questions and just another reason to be part of BNAPS in one way or another. |

Robert, There are just too many of the inking issues with the Admirals. All of them are really considered normal unless it is a super huge ink smear. You have to learn to distinguish these with the real errors. It's not always easy to do. |

Robert, I got from the previous that if you find one without the hairlines you have the real variety!
