Hi, I am new to stamp collecting and have just bought this.
I want to know if it's fake or not and also what plate it's from.
If you can help that would be great.

I'll guess you have Plate 6 while we wait for the experts to come 'round.

Hopefully you did not pay too much when you bought it. As a starter to collecting you perhaps should have asked for some advice (on this forum for instance). Get advice then buy.
The stamp is genuine and plate 6. Prices for cut-into 3 margin stamps are very low at the moment but I hope you got a bargain to start you off.

Stamp collectors (especially collectors of GB material) are ruthless about condition. This would be described by a dealer as a three-margin example, and there is a significant hit to the generally-accepted value for that missing top margin. In fact, if the top margin was there, then the next comment would be that the lower right margin is a little close for comfort. (The Gibbons catalogue illustrates their grading of margins on Penny Blacks with pictures of different examples.)

I've spent a little more than I needed to on more occasions than I'd like to admit. You have a Penny Black and you know the plate number. That's pretty good for a beginning collector. At some point you might decide to upgrade, but since you know about plate numbers, you might choose to buy an example of another plate first. Perhaps this one will be your "Plate 6" example for quite some time.

It is all part of the learning process. You can spend £50 on dinner and have little to show for it, so you are still ahead of the game in that regard.
