The long diagonal/oblique scratch line "/" looks like it forms the letter "Z" going across and between the left frame lines. |

Sure looks like a nice plate scratch to me. Cute dog. I guess he had to "scratch" at some point. |

Just an update to my find April 4th ,2015
Some one in 2017 wrote his information on the "dog scratch" variety in 2017 and sent it to N.C.C.S. catalog and got credit for it..Oh well..Such is politics. Robert |

I published the Dog Scratch variety in Dots and Scratches Newsletter of the BNAPS Re-entry and Constant Plate Variety Study Group and promptly heard back from John Walsh who informed me that he published the flaw in the latest NSSC, 11th edition. He lists it as position 95 on the plate. |

Robert if you hadn't brought it to my attention I wouldn't have this nice block to look at. That is what sharing is all about. The lower left stamp in block is position 95 the Dog Scratch variety. If Robert hadn't shared his stamps I wouldn't have this in my collection. Thank you Robert. |

I am jealous Mike..Beautiful block..Good for you.
Mike has a block with the "dog scratch" variety on it..Bottom left corner and surprisingly the top left stamp has a horizontal line..Some thing for me to find.

Here is a Quote from Dots and Scratches Newsletter concerning the marks found on the block of four:
"Your editor just received this unused block of four. The lower left stamp has the "Dog Scratch" variety. Also note other small marks in the same general area. The upper two stamps appear to have a horizontal guide line running across the top of the stamps about on a par with the fourth horizontal line in the background and through the UN of NEWFOUNDLAND on both stamps. Would the guide line be useful in getting this variety a plate position? There may also be some guide dots present around the stamps. I also note traces of a guide line in similar position but less pronounced on the bottom two stamps."
Of course after writing this we found out the Dog Scratch is from position 95 as mentioned earlier in this thread.

There is a constant feature that apparently occurred on the original die of this stamp design. It was brought to my attention by a fellow collector today. It is a fine diagonal line running from the dog's hair into the top of the N of CENTS. The image below has red lines that indicate where the fine line begins and ends. |

Whenever I read about a fine diagonal line, I now read that as a probable plate scratch. Are there alternative possibilities, other than an engraver's slip?
Love the examples. I don't own any of this item, but will be on the lookout for this and other varieties. |
