I want to be able to do this on my own but ran into a brick wall. I have a stamp (good start) It is a revenue stamp however I can not find a picture of it to start to identify it. I have type everything into google and got nothing. so I am looking for a very good page or a place to start my search.

it is a US inter 2 Cent stamp. it is signed and a date, I think the date is 1919?? fancy writing is so hard to read. anyways I am open to learn. I inherited a huge hoarder's collection and I am self teaching.

I really want to learn so I am not including a photo yet.

A good method for identifying unknown stamps is to use an online 'reverse image search'. A reverse image search you show you other visually similar stamps to the one you are trying to identify.

1. Scan or take picture of the stamp you are trying to identify. Save the image to your desktop.

2. Open your browser and navigate to Google images (https://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&...=0EKouCBcoAQ).

3. Click on the camera icon (Search By Image).

4. Click on the Upload an Image and then Browse to the image file you save in Step 1.

5. File will upload and show you visually similar images found. Click on the similar images and go to their associated web page to help identify your stamp.

I presume from your post that you do not have access to a Scott Specialized US catalog? Depending on where you live, your local library might have one.

I am a little curious on why you do not want to post a picture?

If you are comfortable that it's a revenue, you are already well on your way. One of the best places to dig around for revenues is Eric Jackson's dealer website, http://ericjackson.com. But even the Wikipedia page for "revenue stamps of the United States" has a significant number of images.

The American Revenue Association's website has a links page, http://www.revenuer.org/philatelic-links.asp that has other good resources, including Bob Hohertz's "What the Rs Are" which is a neat introduction to revenue stamps.

i dont want to be show a pix yet, because I do not want someone say that is so common a 3 year could have found it. it a XXXX that wont teach me a thing.

I am enjoying getting back into collecting but I get frustrated because I have no one to teach me. I search this page and so far this is the friendliest page I have found. I just need a few recommend pages that I can use. I found most of the regular pages but revenue I am have a hard time. as for it being a revenue I thought because it said us inter it was a revenue or at least a back of the book stamp.

Many United States revenues are listed in the standard Scott catalogue as "back of the book" items.

Spoiler alert!

Two possible identifications follow:

Maybe Scott #R197 or #R208?

Both are 2 cent rose stamps from 1914 inscribed "Documentary - United States Internal Revenue"

No one is going to say that. You're in the right place so just post a pic and someone will tell you what it is and where you would find it.

Sounds like it might be an official stamp instead of a revenue which might be why you can't find it.

Does it look like this?

If you do not have a Scott Specialized Catalog you can also try the US PopUp Tool on Stamp Smarter. It has a complete listing of all US stamps (including Revenues) listed by Scott Number.
