I regret if this sounds petty or mean spirited, but in my view, never wise to discuss a live auction.

Sorry.

Hello list members,

Can a member confirm that the following penny reds are die 2 alphabet 3 on blued paper?

They are all on covers and the best I can make out, all have the large crown watermark.

I have cropped the scans to show just the lettering with the date of posting to the right of each stamp portion.

Looking over this topic on identifying penny reds it has rekindled my interest in these issues any help or pointers in
identifying the plates from the letters shown would be appreciated.

Hi agb,

I'm certainly no expert but using my Gibbons QV specialised catalogue as a guide, I'd say the 1st, 4th, 5th & 6th stamps are Alphabet 3, the 3rd stamp I'd say is alphabet 2; the 2nd stamp I wouldn't like to try to identify with only half the letters showing.

I have some 1d stars that I will be looking at more closely next year so I hope to gain some more knowledge and experience in this field.

Hi reapolaco,

Yours is a 1d red, letters in all four corners. It looks like the plate number is 71, upside down at the base of the image as you've shown it. There are numbers in the netting on each vertical side on these stamps that you should be able to pick out with a good magnifying glass.

Hope all this helps and hopefully someone more experienced than me can chime in too
